He said he had come across four cases at pension consultancy LCP, where he now works, of people not having the inherited pensions they are owed paid to them. All had been told in writing or over the phone by the department that they were not entitled. Sir Steve said that these were just the “tip of the iceberg”, with “many thousands” of people potentially underpaid.
But Sir Steve said this figure is likely to be even bigger with the new identified group of widows and widowers, who lost their partner before they retired, needing payment. The exact amount of inherited state pension will depend on individual circumstances, but will be greater if:The widow or widower is not receiving a widow’s pension from a company pension scheme Whether the claimant comes under the old or new state pension systemThe company’s previous tool to help married women check for underpayments had more than one million visits and helped large numbers of women to identify that they were owed money.
