This field outside the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup was used as a staging area for thousands of Pierce County students who took part in a lahar drill to prepare for the possible eruption of Mount Rainier on March 21, 2024. Thousands of students from several Pierce County school districts took part in an evacuation drill Thursday to prepare for the possibility of an eruption at Mount Rainier.
Mount Rainier is an active volcano with a high probability of erupting, according to the drill’s organizers. An eruption could send a lahar, or flow of mud and debris, through wide swaths of development.
