Nearly a third of the migrants are Venezuelans, according to the city’s dashboard.

Migrants gather on the grounds of the San Antonio Migrant Resource Center on San Pedro on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023. A surge of migrants, mostly from Venezuela, has arrived at the Texas/Mexico border in recent days. The city of San Antonio’s migrant dashboard shows nearly 25,000 migrants arrived here between Aug. 23 and Wednesday — less than one month’s time. The biggest one-day influx occurred Tuesday, when 1,100 new migrants were reported. On Wednesday, the number slowed to 598 migrants.

Long lines and large crowds gathered outside the Migrant Resource Center on Thursday, including children and babies, but everything appeared orderly and peaceful. Some sat at picnic tables set up in the shade of some large trees, where they waited patiently for help. Some sat in a single-file line against an outside wall of the center.

One woman sat on blankets with two young children, including a baby dressed only in a diaper. Other migrants waiting for aid reclined on the ground to sleep. Fernandez, speaking through an interpreter, said he already has spent two nights at the resource center and planned to do so again Thursday night. Migrants are allowed a maximum three-night stay at the facility, he said.
