The HBCU STEM recruiting fair welcomed around 7,500 local high school students and community members in 2019, and that bumped up to 8,000 in 2021, said Chris Massey, vice president at Houston Sports. He expects to surpass those numbers this year.
Careers in STEM are often more lucrative than non-STEM occupations. In 2021 the median annual salary for non-STEM jobs was $40,120, while for STEM jobs it was $95,420, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Recruitment fairs are helpful, Brown said, not only to get more information about schools, but also to connect in person with recruiters from the HBCUs.
