A leading mental health charity has expressed concern as new data reveals the number of antidepressant prescription items dispensed to those aged 18 and under has increased by more than 60% in the past decade.
Of the 11,564 items dispensed in 2014, 407 of these were issued to those under 12 and the remaining 11,157 to 12 to 17 year olds. This rose to 19,068 last year with 542 issued to those under 12 and 18,526 to 12 to 17 year olds. "However, we advocate for a comprehensive mental health approach, where alternatives like talking therapies, one-on-one therapy, and peer support are equally important. Ms McCully added: "The strained Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services , alongside reductions in services like the Healthy Happy Minds school counselling, highlights the pressing challenges stemming from funding cuts.
