The Northern Territory has recorded its first community transmission COVID-19, sending the town of Katherine into a full snap lockdown and confining unvaccinated Darwin residents to their homes.

Everyone living in either region must wear a mask when leaving the house, regardless of vaccination status. The Chief Minister said vaccination rates were the reason for the different measures imposed in Katherine — where 65 per cent of over 16s are fully vaccinated and 75 per cent have had at least one dose — and Darwin."This is the best reason you will ever have for getting jabbed," Mr Gunner said, of the community transmission."You're going to help make sure this is hopefully the last lockdown by getting vaccinated.

In greater Darwin, customers will need to show their vaccination certificate in order to access cafes, restaurants and other non-essential businesses.
