More than 4,000 Oncor customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area lost power Sunday afternoon due to high wind gusts. The outages occurred just before a cold snap expected to bring freezing temperatures and potential snow to the region.

An ONCOR crew member works to restore power on Junius Street following Monday’s flooding on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, in Junius Heights in Dallas, TX.More than 4,000 Oncor customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area were without power Sunday afternoon just ahead of a cold snap expected to arrive in the region during the overnight and forecast to chill North Texas for the next several days.

An Oncor spokesman blamed the power outages on high wind gusts blowing through the area Sunday. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory warning about wind gusts of up to 40 mph. With the wind advisory in effect until 6 p.m., the impact could be additional potential outages in the region, the Oncor official said. The weather service also issued a cold weather advisory for North Texas that is in effect from midnight to 10 a.m. on Monday.

Temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s overnight with wind gusts as high as 35 mph, according to a detailed forecast from the weather service.. Over 1,000 customers were experiencing power outages in Tarrant County, and about 800 were without power in Denton and Collin counties. At one point, as many as 5,000 customers were without power during the day, according to an outage map.

It is not immediately clear when the outages will be restored or if they will be before tonight’s freeze. However, the Oncor spokesperson said restoration times across Dallas will vary based on when they happened. Crews working as quickly and as safely as possible to get those outages fixed right now, he said.
