Those you love are your truest treasures | Opinion
As we watch war from a distance, I keep thinking of all the Ukrainians who are leaving behind most everything they know and love, focused on their family first.
Most of the neighbors around us have turned over once or twice. For some families, our neighborhood means starter homes. For this family, it’s been our forever home. We’ve hosted baby showers and birthday parties, Girl Scout meetings and Bible studies. We’ve decorated for major and minor holidays 20 years in a row.If I were forced to flee right now, what would I take and what would I leave behind? I’d grab whatever we could carry, whatever would be most essential for survival, and leave the rest behind.
I’d like to go back in time and take back every time that I complained about moving or switching schools. I’m embarrassed by my ungrateful grumblings of youth and privilege.
