Black Friday isn't what it used to be, but readers have fond memories - and some not so cheery - of shopping the day after Thanksgiving.
The easy convenience of internet shopping has largely done away with the early morning frenzy many associate with Black Friday.
Susan Dennis Wyatt remembered a specific routine one Black Friday. “Got up before dawn...Put on coat over PJs...went to Walmart. Bought a TV, checked out, went home...removed coat...went back to bed. Slept well!!!” “Well you can imagine the scene,” she wrote. “It sickened me to see that people thought this was what the season was all about.”
Brad Lackey remembers seeing former Monkee Davy Jones perform at the Riverchase Galleria. “It was probably 2 a.m. and he sang the chorus to ‘Daydream Believer’ about 73 times. It was great.” Gloria Gould was at Walmart at 5 a.m. in the year 2000 with her mother. On another occasion, she went while eight months pregnant to guard a TV on sale, “knowing no one was gonna argue or mess with me.”
