A new Marvel comic explores an alternate origin where Thor bonds with the Venom symbiote instead of Spider-Man, dramatically altering both characters' histories and the outcome of the Secret Wars.
Marvel's latest What If...? story reimagines a pivotal moment in comic history by replacing Spider-Man with Thor as Venom's first host. In the new issue, Thor discovers the alien symbiote on Battleworld while attempting to repair his cape using a fabric replicator.
The entity bonds with him, transforming his royal attire into a black-and-white ensemble while enhancing his durability without fully taking over his body. Unlike Spider-Man, who wore the symbiote for months during the original Secret Wars-allowing it to study human emotions and physiology-Thor's brief interaction would likely have prevented the symbiote from developing complex sentience.
Had Thor retained the symbiote, his magical nature and resourcefulness might have led him to detect and destroy it, or his potent abilities could have overwhelmed the creature. The symbiote's subsequent evolution into a character hinged on Peter Parker's rejection and Eddie Brock's hatred, creating the iconic Venom. Without that chain of events, Marvel's future would lack one of its most enduring antiheroes.
The story also depicts Thor leading the heroes on Battleworld, surpassing even the Hulk's legendary strength feats from the original crossover. This alternate timeline demonstrates how a single change-the first host-reshapes not only a character's destiny but entire universe-spanning narratives. The issue, written by Torunn Grønbæk and illustrated by Sergio Davila, arrives on June 17, 2026, prompting readers to consider how different Marvel's cosmic history might be if the God of Thunder had encountered the symbiote first
