Of the approximately 185,000 applicants registered for entry, less than 3 percent, or 4,200 runners, will be accepted in the drawing. The world’s largest marathon is as massive in size as it is in popularity. On Sunday, November 1, 2020, around 50,000 runners will traverse the five boroughs of the Big Apple during the New York City Marathon, which begins in Staten Island and ends in spectator-packed Central Park.
Each year, more and more applicants throw their names into the notoriously selective drawing system for a shot at scoring an NYC race bib—and 2020, which marks the 50th anniversary of the race, was no exception. During the registration window from January 30 to February 13, as well as a short period during the 2019 NYC Marathon, runners around the world registered for NYC through the New York Road Runners’s system and crossed their fingers for the drawing on Wednesday, February 26. Throughout the day today, lucky runners will find out if they’re accepted if they see the entry fee charge show up on their credit card statements.
