How will the Hoover football team react after the abrupt change in head coaches this week?
Hoover's Jonah Winston and Mac Beason talk to reporters during AL.com HS football media days at Thompson High School in Alabaster, Ala., Monday, July 29, 2024. Actually, more like a whirlwind three days.
After opening at Western, Fla., on a Saturday, the Bucs come back home the next Friday to play rival Spain Park, which dropped to 6A this season. They then open the 7A, Region 3 schedule with road games at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa and at Hewitt-Trussville. It’s been a tough week, but it can still be a memorable season. How many times have we seen a sports team galvanized by an off-the-field or court incident or tragedy leading to an impressive run?A lot has been made recently – and in this column particularly – about the increase in the amount of high school student-athletes transferring from one school to another. When I sent emails this summer in order to do previews on each class, I asked coaches who their top newcomers were.
I’m not sure what the answer is, but I hope new AHSAA executive director Heath Harmon has some ideas. Certainly, the trend has grown with the popularity of the NCAA Transfer Portal, but that doesn’t mean it is a good thing on either level.
