Created by bestselling thriller author Harlan Coben, this eight-part series is definitely no Scooby Doo.
Credit:Harlan Coben is the author of bestselling thrillers , 11 of which feature protagonist Myron Bolitar, an NBA star turned detective. Twisty and dark, they’re definitely for adults, but in 2011, he created a spin-off YA series featuring Myron’s nephew Mickey.
Staying at the house where Shira and Brad grew up, Mickey, who before the accident was living abroad where his parents worked in some kind of humanitarian area, enrols at his dad’s former school. He befriends another new student, Ashley , and the pair arranges to meet after school. But Ashley never turns up - and then she’s missing from school.
Does it have something to do with “Bat Lady” , who lives in the town’s creepy tumbledown mansion? . So far, so– especially once Mickey teams up with the nerdy Spoon and emo outsider Ema Winslow to search for Ashley.Amazon Prime But as Coben’s story – with some minor changes from the book – unfolds, its multiple plots head into decidedly darker territory than its early teen-drama tropes, such as Mickey being hassled by the school jocks or Ema harbouring dark secrets suggest, and there are several tonal shifts as the series progresses.
As the trio search for Ashley, a complicated story emerges of the disappearance in the ’90s of another local kid, Dylan Shakes, who was Brad’s best friend. Then there’s the song,, a favourite of Mickey and his parents, that was playing when they had the car accident. The album features a butterfly on the cover, a motif that appears throughout, including on a temporary tattoo that Ema has on her shoulder. There’s also a mysterious man with an octopus tattooed on his face.
