The last season of ABC's The Rookie was jam-packed with exciting storylines. With everything from serial killers to steamy Valentine's Day hookups, there was zero chance of getting bored. But the Season 7 finale also left us with plenty of questions.
What will happen with Monica Stevens now that she's a free woman? Will the gang be able to bring her down for good? We're also wondering whether serial killer Liam Glasser is going to resurface since he seems like one of the creepiest villains The Rookie has introduced so far. And then, of course, we're dying to find out the status of Chenford. Tim Bradford was, at long last, able to open up to Lucy Chen and ask her to move in with him, but Lucy fell asleep during his big speech. Are these two lovebirds finally going to be able to make their relationship permanent? Unfortunately, it looks like we won't be getting answers to our questions for a while, and now we know why. 'The Rookie' Won't Return Until 2026 It used to be fairly reliable that each network show would end in May or June and pop back up again in September. However, The Rookie has now stuck to a mid-season release for the past two years with Seasons 6 and 7. That means that instead of getting brand-new episodes just a few months after the finale, we've had to wait until January or February to check back in with our favorite characters. It was announced earlier in the year that The Rookie would be continuing with that scheduling strategy, and won't be airing new episodes until 2026. It's not as though The Rookie cast isn't already hard at work shooting new episodes. In fact, we've gotten to see hints of the actors on set from their social media posts. There's also been confirmation that the crew is filming in Prague, where the first episode of the season will be located. Perhaps the officers of the LAPD take their crimefighting overseas to catch Monica. With a little bit of additional information, we've learned exactly why The Rookie already has some episodes in the bag, but viewers can't catch Season 8 until next year. 'The Rookie: North' Spin-Off Is Causing a Delay It was confirmed last year that the success of The Rookie had inspired creator Alexi Hawley to produce a spin-off series. We don't know a ton about the show yet, except that it will follow another police rookie, and The Rookie: North will take place in Seattle. The spin-off is set to begin filming in late winter this year or in early spring in 2026. Since Hawley will be overseeing both the flagship series and the spin-off, it is possible that he's trying to get as many Rookie episodes wrapped up before he turns his focus to the new series. This would definitely explain why The Rookie crew is already hard at work filming, even though we won't be seeing any of that content for several more months. It's exciting that we'll be getting a new Rookie series in a different setting; however, The Rookie Season 7 finale aired in May, so having to wait until January feels like way too long of a stretch for a crime procedural to check back into how things are going at the Mid-Wilshire precinct. Hopefully, having two shows in the same franchise won't cause any more scheduling problems in the future, otherwise, it might continue to be frustrating that Hawley has to split his focus and his time in this way. At a time when longer and longer production periods means that people lose interest in a show or simply stop watching, keeping this release format could hurt The Rookie. It is a good sign that The Rookie is continuing to film in advance, so we'll just have to hang in there until 2026 rolls around. It's comforting to know that John Nolan and the rest of the gang will be back on our television screens soon, but we're just hoping that The Rookie doesn't make these kinds of delays an ongoing thing. Seasons 1–7 of The Rookie are available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. Season 8 will premiere in January 2026.Powered by Expand Collapse
