A rule of thumb in prompt engineering is that you should mindfully compose your prompts. Do not leave out information that is essential to the question being asked. I’ve showcased over fifty techniques of best-practice prompt engineering in a popular posting .“What is the best way to get from San Francisco to New York City? I am moving to New York City. I currently live in San Francisco, own a car there, and want to have my car with me once I move to New York City.
Worse still, the AI might land on some bizarre answer that incorporates irrelevant information. Imagine if the chain-of-thought opted to consider alien space travel as a possibility. The answer might indicate that the best way to travel from San Francisco to New York City would be via hitching a ride on an outer space saucer that would beam up the car and take you and the vehicle to your destination.
Other generative AI typically does not force a chain-of-thought and, presumably, will be much less likely to fall into this same irrelevancy processing trap. This doesn’t mean that such generative AI gets a free ride. There is also a processing time and some added cost of the conventional generative AI to examine the irrelevant info. Plus, there is a chance that the AI will likewise get drawn into incorporating the off-target info.
Some of these approaches are being used, some are not. Additional advances and adoption are warranted.
