Rolled out by researchers in Vietnam, there are now calls for it to be trialled in Australia.
It is a simple parenting and baby class that costs just $91 per child. Mums and dads are taught how to bathe their baby, make them toys out of household items, eat well in pregnancy and the value of breastfeeding.The babies of the 669 Vietnamese mothers who were part of the 20-session program recorded IQ scores five points higher than the babies in a control group when measured at two years.
“I think there’s a lot we can learn. This 20-session is much more than anyone in Australia gets,” said Fisher, who is presenting at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Melbourne next week. One of the women navigating the joys and challenges of having a second child is 29-year-old Chelsea McCrae, who has two daughters aged four months and two years.
