While many grain silos around Australia are getting large-scale mural makeovers, the country's first is still operational, little-known and unadorned.

The Peak Hill site needed greater recognition for being the first Commonwealth-built upright silo, according to retired teacher and amateur historian John van der Reyden.

"There were Dubbo, Narromine, Gilgandra [under construction] but Peak Hill was the first one," he said. Mr van der Reyden said it was a great feat considering many tradesmen and resources were occupied with the war effort.Kevin Rodda grew up just a stone's throw away from the structure and had relatives who were involved in its construction and later expansion."There were always line-ups — right back up past our place — where the trucks would line up to deposit their grain into the silo," Mr Rodda said.
