The Cowboys kicker drilled a 66-yard field goal in Cleveland... or so it appeared.
Dallas Cowboys place kicker Brandon Aubrey watches his field goal attempt during the first half against the Cleveland Browns, Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, in Cleveland.made all five of his field goal attempts on Sunday. But it was one he made that didn’t count because of a confusing delay of game penalty. The five-yard penalty pushed Aubrey into an NFL-record 71-yard field goal attempt. Aubrey said punter Bryan Anger told him it wouldn’t be a good idea kicking into the swirling wind.
“Normally the ref holds the clock so he didn’t hold the clock this time, so kinda ran out of time,” Aubrey said. “I should have started my process with the clock, maybe they made a mistake, maybe I made a mistake. Not sure. But I didn’t really. I thought iced me after I kicked it. I was warming up getting ready to go and then they pulled me off and at that point, it’s a 71-yard field goal. Bryan made the decision for me. It was the right decision.
Instead of attempting a long field goal with four seconds left, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott attempted a pass that fell incomplete to end the first half. “We were set,” McCarthy said of the 66-yard attempt. “They were substituting. I think there’s a human nature component to it where you hold up for the snap. But at the end of the day, we’re responsible for the clock. It’s unfortunate because it was an excellent kick by Brandon.”Police officer placed on leave after detaining Tyreek Hill before Dolphins game. This is my 15th year covering the Dallas Cowboys.
