Historic warmth this past month globally
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Global temperatures in the month of September were the hottest they have everThis follows July and August being the two hottest months ever on record with September, despite being traditionally somewhat cooler as we head into a transition season, being one the top tier hottest months globally since the start the industrial revolution.
And not only a little, but a lot. Nearly a whole degree above the average since 1980. That not only means globally warmer, but heat simply is energy. The more heat the more energy globally and thus more severe weather. weather and climate disasters. Most of these being severe storms, tropical weather and the impacts of wild fires including those in Maui at Lahaina. The point is, the more heat in the atmosphere the more energy and moisture available for severe weather to develop.
You might be curious also why July, August and September were the warmest globally, since southern hemisphere their summer is December through February. It has to do with land area. There is much more of it in the north, which allows for bigger temperature swings. But the oceans are warming up too, this graphic showing our global sea surface temperatures this year compared to previous. Which as we know can add to more energy for tropical systems.
