This New Horror Thriller Is Turning Into Streaming’s Next Sleeper Hit

While Harlan Coben's twisty novels have become the inspiration for numerous TV shows like Fool Me Once, The Stranger and Missing You, Coben's latest title came about a little differently. Instead of being based on a book like his previous projects, Lazarus , which premiered on Prime Video on October 22, was specifically created for TV by Coben and Danny Brocklehurst.

The six-episode series, which has Me Before You star Sam Claflin at the helm, has been climbing the charts since its release. According to FlixPatrol, Lazarus is currently the third-most-watched show on the global Prime Video charts, only losing out to The Boys spin-off Gen V and the romance super-hit The Summer I Turned Pretty. The show did, however, surpass some other Prime Video hits such as The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, and The Girlfriend. After all, with Coben in the writers' room and Claflin in the lead, the series is already a must-watch. What Is 'Lazarus' About? In the series, Claflin plays Joel “Laz” Lazarus, a forensic psychologist who returns home after the apparent suicide of his father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus . As Laz spends time in his psychiatrist father’s office making sense of the tragedy, as well as his father's odd suicide note, he begins to be haunted by his father's old clients and finds himself entangled in their cold murders that he feels compelled to solve. At the same time, Laz's return to his hometown reignites his obsession with his sister Jenna's murder 25 years earlier. As it turns out, Laz was the first on the scene of his sister's death in 1998, and he saw the yet-to-be-caught murderer flee the scene. Together, both tragedies leave Laz determined to find the truth, even if it costs him his sanity. Will his suspicions of foul play in his father's death be confirmed? Will he finally uncover what happened in his sister's murder? Can he figure out what's behind his increasingly odd experiences in his father's office? 'Lazarus' Has Been Climbing the Charts Despite Mixed Reviews Despite the warm reception from Prime Video viewers, Lazarus has received mixed reviews from viewers and critics alike. Currently, the series has a 48% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with a higher, yet still underwhelming, 63% from the general audience. As such, the series becomes one of Coben's lowest-rated series to date. According to Collider's very own review by Jeff Ewing, however, the series is still worth a watch despite being a mixed bag."Lazarus is a pretty good series that falls shy of being a great one," he wrote. A highlight, for instance, is the acting. As Laz, Claflin shines as an intelligent yet haunted psychologist, one who's determined to find the truth despite an ongoing journey with grief and the ghosts of his and his dad's past. The same goes for Nighy, who's authoritative presence commands the screen, as well as revealing some mysterious hidden layers. Together, both share a believable and realistic father-son relationship that becomes the heart of the series. Overall, while reviews may have not been the most flattering for Lazarus, the series' position in the streaming charts certainly establishes it as a sleeper hit.
