The beloved Brooklyn label Salter House is expanding with a line of sweet, soulful loungewear
Far from the cottagecore-costumed TikTokers of the digital world, there’s an inviting little shop in Brooklyn bringing homestead style to life. Called Salter House, the store has been a quiet mecca for soulful, sustainably made fashion and design since husband-and-wife team Sandeep and Carson Salter opened it in 2018.
Salter House began with a carefully considered assortment of home goods—many of which remain central to the store today—including garden clogs made of hemp plastic, French linen tea towels, pewter tableware, stoneware bowls, and pastel-hued enamel cookware. Shelves are stocked with marble and tortoise combs, handmade soaps, and antique children’s toys. There’s also a small tea and coffee counter, alongside an in-house clothing collection of corsets, mutton-sleeve dresses and tops, and nightgowns. Now, the Salters have expanded their charming urban haven with a new basics line: 100 percent organic cotton pointelle underwear, shorts, camisoles, pants, and more, available both in-store and online. The dreamy loungewear—offered in soft pink, white, and black and embroidered with a delicate bunny illustration—is made entirely in family-owned, family-operated factories in Los Angeles. The goal of the collection, the Salters said over email, is to capture the essence of the shop and their evolving brand: clothing that feels lived-in, intentional, and wholesome. The basics, they explained, are “another piece of the puzzle.” They added, “We plan to slowly and carefully build on these essentials in the years to come, continuing to create a well-stocked, heirloom-quality, sustainable wardrobe. Some clothing carries a feeling similar to the comfort of home, and we find ourselves developing new products in pursuit of that feeling. We imagine our basics being experienced the same way as the home—as part of domestic life.”That sense of home is immediate upon stepping into Salter House’s flagship store. In addition to the exquisitely curated shelves and the “houseclothes,” as the Salters refer to their in-house fashion offerings, the space includes a small tea and coffee counter. The staff often includes artists who work with the Salters’ adjacent gallery space, Picture Room.“We opened our doors wanting our shop and café to be part of the fabric of our neighborhood, Brooklyn Heights, where we’re raising our kids,” the couple said. After launching their first line a few years ago, the moment to build from within began to feel right—and with the introduction of the basics collection, that momentum continues. “As we designed our own collections, the business started to reflect us in a more real and complex way,” they explained. “Not just through what we select, but through how we choose to make things. That’s been the real joy—learning production methods, deepening our design practices, moving through the garment district with our makers, and spending time in the shop talking to customers every day. It’s created a direct feedback loop we build on with each collection.”In an era when most of us are endlessly scrolling feeds and shopping apps in search of the next “It” item, encountering a place like Salter House feels like a rare pleasure. It’s a brick-and-mortar retail experience rooted in genuine delight and discovery—where warmth and humanity are part of the offering, not just the pitch. Salter House’s basics are covetable for their ultra-soft fabrics and thoughtful silhouettes, but also for the way they ground us in the idea of living—and dressing—beautifully, at home and everywhere in between.
