2021's Mortal Kombat movie provided an origin for Scorpion, though another entry in the series had already done a better job with his backstory.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT There's one Mortal Kombat movie that did a way better job with Scorpion's tragic origin than the 2021 movie. Popular as the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie adaptation was, its PG-13 rating never let it get as gruesome and visceral as its video game source.
Of course, no adaptation would be complete without featuring Scorpion and Sub-Zero. The latter assassin became one of the 2021 movie's key villains, and in the prologue is seen killing Hanzo Hasashi and his family, with Hanzo later being resurrected as the vengeful Scorpion. While this sequence is an effective and even somewhat emotional opening for the story, Mortal Kombat then oddly sidelines Scorpion for most of the runtime and instead focuses on his descendant Cole Young .
It also opened in the past, where Hanzo is seen bonding with his young son before being ambushed by Sub-Zero and his minions. This opening is wince-inducingly violent and bloody - and in keeping with the most recent outings in the game series - but more than that, it just does do a better job with Scorpion's origin. Along with explaining where he got his name, it sells the sorrow of his family's murder and his burning hatred for Sub-Zero .
What The Live-Action Mortal Kombat Movies Can Learn From The Animated Films Scorpion's Revenge still makes the titular, undead Ninja something of a supporting player, but the character's origin tale and the payoff to his arc are way more satisfying. In general, the animated movies are better adaptations than their live-action counterparts. Being animated lets them get away with more outlandish character designs and bloodshed, but they also embrace the wilder elements of the games.
