Vogue reviews Aman New York, one of the most talked-about Manhattan hotel openings of the decade.
Given their size, there’s a surprising level of cosiness to the rooms – the flickering fires certainly help to set the mood, as does the glinting gold latticework on the pivoting doors that surround the outrageously luxurious bathrooms. Woven, wall-sized murals opposite the beds in some of the suites call to mind the late 16th-century masterpiece “Shōrin-zu byōbu [Pine Trees]” by Hasegawa Tōhaku. It’s tempting never to leave.
In a word: discreet. Aside from members of the Aman Club , only hotel guests and their invitees are permitted beyond the ground floor elevators up to reception . Accordingly, the “see-and-be-seen” experience of most New York hotels isn’t at play here, which, for the Aman crowd, comes as a blessed relief. Privacy reigns supreme.
