Spooky's Swirls gain national fame on Food Network for their horror-themed, gluten-free treats. The Chandler bakery doubles as a horror movie museum.
It was a Wednesday afternoon, just days before the holiday weekend, and final preparations were being set for what the owners of Spooky's Swirls bakery in Chandler call"the biggest day of the year."
When making Christmas, Spooky's leans heavily into themes from"The Nightmare Before Christmas" . For Valentine's Day, Forbes and Szydlowski incorporate famous horror film couples and movies like"My Bloody Valentine" , for those who enjoy a little bit of fright with their romance. Unlike many gluten-free chefs, Forbes and Szydlowski do not have Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance themselves. Forbes said she began making her own gluten-free recipes when she was the executive pastry chef at Kaleidoscope.
"We did a lot of research. We did a lot of taste testing," Szydlowski said."And I'm very humble, but I have to say, some of we tasted wasn't really all that." Szydlowski became interested in collecting movie props when she was a child, and said that much of what is on display in Spooky's Swirls comes from her own personal collection. The idea to open a horror museum within the bakery came about when she met Azrael.
