Executive producer Elizabeth Berger reveals the secrets behind the episode, which answered all our questions about Kate and Toby's future.
It gets more complicated: At the birthday party Kate and Toby are still married, but they're having problems. While Kate is talking about her dream job, Toby snidely remarks that if it just paid decent money, they'd actually be pretty well off. She's annoyed, but he says it was just a jab at her school, not at her. Kate excuses herself to the bedroom and Kevin follows her. “How do I know when it's time to end a marriage?” she asks tearfully.
We're then back to Kate telling Toby their marriage is over, and we see clips of them going to mediation, lawyer meetings, and Toby moving into a very modest apartment. We also get a sweet scene of an awkward, nonspeaking Kate and Toby in the elevator of their lawyer's office building when Whitney Houston's rendition of “I Will Always Love You” starts playing. The two can't help but laugh at the irony of the moment. Even in the midst of divorce, they find a minute to laugh.
Back to Kate and Toby signing divorce papers. After they walk out, she says, "Just because our marriage is over doesn’t mean our story is over.” Months later, we see Toby buying a house and fixing Jack's room up with the same furniture as his son's room at Kate's so it’s easy to navigate. Toby seems to be doing well and getting his life in order. He might still be in the same windowless office, but at least his home life is getting an upgrade.

Don't stop reading now…there's a lot to get to.Glamour: Did you and Isaac go back and forth about whether it was right for Toby to call Kate the day of her wedding to Phillip, even though we find out at the end that it was to say that he knows they were not meant to be? Because that could obviously rock a woman on her wedding day.That's interesting.
That makes perfect sense now. It was so interesting to see Kevin fall back into a pattern of dating random women without much substance, only because it felt like he had grown so much in the last few years. When I was talking to Justin and Sterling last week,of the women that he brings into his children’s lives.
Let’s move on to seeing Kate in the deep future, as I call it. That was such a thrill to see Chrissy in some of the older age makeup, because there had been fear about whether Kate was even alive in that time period. And then to see her and Toby with their respective spouses and with Jack and his wife. Was that reveal always intended for this moment?
Yes. You're going to get much more adorable Kate and Phillip. It's so interesting how she had this amazing chemistry with Toby, and with Sully, and now Phillip brings to it a whole other kind of amazing chemistry that is totally beautiful in its own unique way. That was really exciting for us to see because, obviously, people have fallen in love with Kate and Toby as a couple.
