MDOT says they are still investigating what caused the collapse and say safety is a priority.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Miss. - Just about two weeks ago, the Highway 98 bridge that stretches over the Homochitto River in Franklin County collapsed. The incident is now causing a delay in the bridge’s opening that was supposed to be completed in 2026.

Residents of Franklin County say they have been waiting on the re-opening for years and now may have to wait a few more.Luckily, no one was injured during this collapse. Some of you who live in the area say they were surprised to see something like this happen. Page Goff is a resident of Liberty.MDOT says concrete beams gave out at the site that caused the structure to collapse. Until the road is complete, people in Franklin County will have to continue to take the long way around to bypass the bridge. Goff went on to say, “For people that live down 98, that have to drive to Franklin County every day or drive to Meadville every day... they are just exasperated by the whole thing. Because it’s added 15 minutes to and from.”Many of you have been waiting for the re-opening for a while now, so how much longer will you have to wait? Albert White, MDOT’s District 7 Engineer, said, “I would say in a couple of weeks. We may know long-term what the completion of the project is. Originally, it would be completed next year, but the roadway was supposed to be open, hopefully, around December. The bridge will be open back to traffic while they do other work. But of course this sets it back, way back, so you’re looking further into next year.” in October when three construction workers were killed at a bridge over the Strong River in Simpson Countyclick hereNew court documents reveal possible cause of fatal crash in ThomasvilleFather believed to have killed entire family in apparent murder-suicide on son’s high school graduation dayAlabama lawmakers wrap up 2025 legislative session
