The festival in Rymill Park was a liberating experience compared with many of its overcrowded, overpoliced counterparts in other cities.

So many performing arts festivals nowadays promise hedonism, and deliver an overcrowded and over-policed reality.

Not so The Adelaide Fringe Festival. As befitting an event with non-conformity at its heart, its headquarters at Rymill Park exuded a genuine anything-goes atmosphere while theAaron Walker, which commenced at the decidedly grown-up time of 10.30pm. You could even bring in drinks - from pop-up bars with 3am licenses, and hardly any queues!

A tipple or two was definitely in the spirit of this show, housed in the ‘Moa’ tent of the Festival’s aptly-named ‘Gluttony’ hub.More than a couple of the deadly sins were in evidence as the hard-bodied performers fromA dominatrix walking her slave over broken glass? Check? A stripper taking a chainsaw to her armour-clad chastity belt? Check. An opera-singing acrobat giving us some credibleWith plenty of comedy thrown in with the thrills,Which is exactly what Fringe treats its guests like.

Happily exhausted, we went and bought another chardonnay and sat down at one of the tables set up by the duck pond - the kind of possie that at a Sydney or Melbourne Festival, would have been bagsed hours ago. As laughter drifted over from the Virago comedy tent, and floor-fillers from the nearby artists’ hangout Club Curious, we marveled that all of this was allowed to happen after midnight.
