A little girl in the winter woods in Game of Thrones
The number of fantasy TV shows continues to grow, with examples like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, House of the Dragon, and The Witcher still ongoing, while more join the list. But even with the genre expanding at an alarming rate, no premiere has managed to top Game of Thrones' first episode, and it may never happen.
The opening of any series is critical as it must give fans a reason to stay, and fantasy series often require detailed world-building, which can be difficult to establish in an easily understandable episode. But Game of Thrones' premiere,"Winter Is Coming," manages all of that gracefully. When it comes to Game of Thrones, the first episode has a nearly impossible job of introducing a massive world and setting up the complex conflicts that needed eight seasons to unfold while drawing fans in. Yet the first installment excelled as all of this. Despite the many opinions on the ending, fans agree that Game of Thrones' early seasons were well done, even without the monumental budget that it eventually received. The premiere set the series on that path, allowing the series to grow into the pop-culture phenomenon that it is. 'Game of Thrones' Wastes No Time Introducing the World Game of Thrones makes use of every minute of the premiere, as it undertakes the difficult task of introducing the sprawling world that most fans have no context for. Though, of course, several had read George R. R. Martin's books, many others were flying blind. Between the variety within the Seven Kingdoms and the early importance of Essos, establishing the world is no easy task. Game of Thrones' premiere largely takes place in the North as Robert and his retinue go to Winterfell to ask Ned to be the Hand of the King, but it must use the time it has to show the differences in key places. Winterfell, beyond the Wall, King's Landing, and even the city of Pentos appear, and each is drastically different, setting up how massive the world is."Winter Is Coming" immediately creates a contrast between Westeros and Essos through Daenerys' story as she is married off to Khal Drogo , which shows the brutal ways of the Dothraki. With clear but subtle visual cues, Game of Thrones instantly shows how expansive the world is without distracting from the plot. "Winter Is Coming" also explores the history of the world, with references to the Mad King, Robert's Rebellion, and Jon's birth. By showing where Westeros has been, the episode lays the groundwork for the future, especially Daenerys' plotline as she attempts to regain control of her family's throne. Meanwhile, scenes like Robert visiting Lyanna in the crypt not only highlight the mystery around her, which isn't fully revealed until much later in the series, but also show Cersei's resentment toward her husband. The history, in many cases, is used to help introduce the large and complex cast of characters. While many important figures join the show later, the first episode must balance many introductions. The series quickly establishes the Starks, the Lannisters, and the Targaryens, with each family having a different dynamic. The Starks have the largest family, and considering that they separate in Episode 2, and many never see each other again, the premiere does an incredible job of showcasing these relationships that last throughout the series and drive the characters' choices. Additionally, the introduction of major players, like Tyrion or Joffrey , is vital to understanding the series. The premiere establishes what the characters are about, and, though they become more complicated as the show continues, fans have a sense of their personality and history immediately, thanks to the clear and effective introduction. 'Game of Thrones' Premiere Sets the Tone For the Series The first episode marks the beginning of several long-standing plots, giving the audience a clear idea of what to expect. The opening sets up the supernatural threat of the White Walkers, while showing that it is not a story people are ready to believe. By providing a glimpse of the slow-moving conflict, the series raises the stakes for the rest of the story because even as war breaks out over the Iron Throne, the audience knows that Westeros needs unity more than ever. The White Walkers have a minimal role in the premiere, but they set the tone for the series by establishing the biggest threat to the world. The repercussions of this opening sequence echo throughout the series, which is part of what makes Season 8's rushed conclusion of the White Walker storyline so disappointing. Yet the premiere sets up a lot more than the White Walkers. From the beginning, Game of Thrones is filled with political intrigue as Jon Arryn's death is shown to be suspicious, and Cersei and Jaime's affair is explored. This drama proves that, by accepting the job Robert offers, Ned is walking into a fraught situation. It is these storylines, as well as Ned's careful consideration about becoming Hand of the King, that propel the story forward, because if the premiere were all about introductions and world-building, it would not be nearly as entertaining."Winter Is Coming" even ends on a shocking cliffhanger when Jaime pushes Bran off a tower to protect his and Cersei's secret, showing the brutal nature of the series as not even a small child is safe. Plus, the moment leaves the audience with more questions than answers, so that they come back for more. With so much going on, it's difficult not to be pulled in, and that's what makes a perfect first episode. The Premiere Wasn't 'Game of Thrones' First Try Despite the episode's elite status among premieres, the episode the audience saw was not the first attempt to introduce the series. Game of Thrones underwent extensive reshoots after HBO picked up the first season, giving the team a chance to improve on the idea before introducing the series to the world. This included recasting major roles, like Daenerys and Catelyn , and adding more exposition to the dialogue. The lengths the cast and crew went to prove that there were considerable issues with the first pilot. Reportedly, some people walked away from the original pilot unaware of critical information, like the fact that Cersei and Jaime are siblings. However, the redo made the introduction to Westeros much clearer. Even the creators of the series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, admit that the finished product was a vast improvement on the original pilot. Despite fears that they wouldn't get to make their series, Beinoff and Weiss owned their mistakes and got another chance. Game of Thrones was a risky series, and the original pilot made it riskier, but HBO saw through that, ordering a full season, including a mostly reshot pilot. The first episode of Game of Thrones might have taken two tries to get right, but in the end, it launched one of the most popular series of the decade with clarity, intensity, and intrigue, making it the best fantasy premiere to date. 67 9.4/10 Game Of Thrones 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Drama Action Adventure Fantasy Release Date 2011 - 2019-00-00 Showrunner David Benioff, D.B.
