The designer upcycled her mother’s ’90s Carolina Herrera gown for her wedding day.
“It had actually been hanging in the closet at my house my whole life,” Quintana tells. “Once I tried it on, I knew I had to wear it, and rescue it. After 30 years, it was in quite a bad state – there were a few stains and small holes, and some of the original pearls and flowers had fallen off.”
Catalina Quintana, pictured with husband Enrique Desantiago, reworked her mother’s Carolina Herrera dress for her wedding day. After getting the dress professionally cleaned, Quintana went about reworking it in her studio in Caracas. The designer altered the neckline, making it strapless, while also adding a hooped skirt and a bustle at the back for more structure and volume. “I didn’t want to stray too far from the original identity of the dress,” the bride explains.
Quintana and her team also painstakingly replaced a number of the floral adornments, restoring the gown to its former glory. Unsurprisingly, her mother, Maria, was touched by her daughter’s choice. “She was very honoured,” the designer says. “I am her only daughter, so if I didn’t wear it, the dress would have been sitting in the closet in vain for the past 30 years. I felt like the dress was waiting for me to give it a new life.
