Carl Parker, convicted in the slaying of a 22-year-old driver, was put to death inside the Harris County Jail on May 4, 1922.
He was the last person executed in Harris County before the state took over such duties.
A request by a federal judge to halt the execution so that a new plea for a writ of habeas corpus could be heard came too late. "He's already hanged," Harris County Sheriff Thomas A. Binford told a federal marshal who relayed the request. Mortie A. Conroy, described by the Chronicle as a rent car driver, was killed in February 1921 by Parker while driving a party to Goose Creek along the Crosby-Goose Creek Road. Parker was arrested in Louisiana. Two others were arrested in Gatesville."I want to say to the public this crime which I am to die for is not my crime," he wrote."I am not responsible for it. I was drunk and the whiskey was doped and I had all the blame to stand, which I am not responsible for.
"I want to say to all the young boys, be careful of the kind of company you keep, and stay out of trouble."
