In the first of a series of articles looking at reckless driving, reporter Mike Thorne introduces the reader to Helen Edgar, a 20-year-old nursing student.

Edgar was killed while walking down Fannin by a driver who was fleeing police. She was dragged more than 200 feet by"the reckless hotrodder."

Following her death, friends and co-workers at Methodist Hospital asked then-Mayor Lewis Cutrer to do something to stop such drivers. Residents also asked state lawmakers to take action. In other news, the Houston school board was looking at how it could prevent another tragedy from occurring like the one that struck McReynolds Junior High a few days earlier. There, a wall collapsed and killed a 13-year-old student.
