When delving into biopic territory, filmmakers need to be very careful about how they go about portraying their subject. On one hand, digging into the life of a famous person - or people - can be incredibly rewarding, giving the fandom a true look behind-the-scenes and into their soul. On the other hand, things can get incredibly dicey, especially when certain facts are tossed to the wayside and the full picture isn’t completely fleshed out.
‘Back to Black’s Bumpy Run in Cinemas Close ✕ Remove Ads Upon its U.S. release in May, Back to Black hit one problem after the next at the global box office. Whether it was word of mouth that the film didn’t live up to the icon at the center of the tale or something completely different, the movie didn’t draw in the viewership numbers that Focus Features was hoping for. When all was said and done, the film brought in less than $51 million, marking it as a financial failure.
