When this couple saw a storefront open up in town, they decided to embark on a journey that’s a whole different kind of sweet: co-owning a hometown doughnut shop together.
Family members of Alan Chow and Lisa Ghilarducci are actively involved with Dynamite Donuts, the couple’s hometown business venture. The pair started dating in high school, and in the more than a decade since, she says, there has been one other constant in his life: doughnuts. Chow began running his family’s Berkeley doughnut shop, Rainbow Donuts, when he was just 18Alan Chow and Lisa Ghilarducci, who both grew up in Hercules, just opened Dynamite Donuts, a doughnut shop, in their hometown.
So when they saw a storefront open up, the couple decided to embark on a journey that’s a whole different kind of sweet: a hometown doughnut shop.and specialty doughnuts that the couple workshops together — Chow is the baker and Ghilarducci tests flavors handles social media. Together, they’ve come up with flavor combinations like limoncello-blueberry, key lime pie, Samoa cookies and even a Hot Cheetos flavor.
The shop offers “OG Classics,” such as old fashioned and raised doughnuts, “Big Bites” — extra-large doughnuts like twisted, raised and buttermilk bars — plus gourmet doughnut selections. Among the doughnuts available at Dynamite Donuts, a new doughnut shop in Hercules, are elegantly frosted raised and cake doughnuts, cronuts and other specialty varieties . . Founded in the 1880s, Hercules was the site of a dynamite factory, the California Powder Works, which later became the Hercules Powder Company.
The San Pablo Bay community of about 26,000 residents has so far come out in support of the doughnut shop, which drew a line down the block at its grand opening, Ghilarducci says. “Hercules is great when it comes to showing up for people.”Open weekdays at 5:30 a.m. and weekends at 6:30 a.m., Dynamite Donuts is located at 3700 Sycamore Ave.
