He said rafting novices, families with younger children and others who can’t swim well should wait until July to book a trip, because flows will be lower then.
By contrast, the South Fork of the American offers rapids that are exciting and fun, but much mellower than its northern counterpart. There are even some sections on the South Fork where passengers can hop out of their rafts and swim. The lower section, dubbed the Gorge, is an easier, 12-mile stretch that offers paddlers rapids with imposing monikers like Deadman’s Drop, Satan’s Cesspool and Hospital Bar.
“The most recent year that was anything near this in terms of snowpack was in 2017, and that was really, really good,” said Chandola, who will have 10 rafts on the South Fork this weekend.
