A new study conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health has found that good hygiene in the home has the power to prevent diseases such as common colds by reducing the spread of harmful microbes.

But the scientists concluded that this might not be the case and that maintaining good hygiene in the home is best for our health. "In our survey, we found that almost 23% of the public agreed with the statement 'hygiene in the home is not important because children need to be exposed to harmful germs to build their immune system', which might suggest a belief that harmful infections can be beneficial to children's development," explains the"This is a potentially harmful belief which could lead to children being exposed unnecessarily to harmful or even life-threatening infections.
The researchers also discovered that exposure to non-harmful microbes found in animals and the outdoors can help build a 'healthy microbiome.' While it's important for children and adults to head outside and explore nature, it shouldn't be confused with getting in the way of good hygiene.
