The untold story of 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space,' the creepiest film in Central California history.
Yet, it’s the practical effects that the movie is remembered for, and it’s even more impressive to see what the Chiodo Brothers were able to accomplish on the fly. Most of the set pieces were sourced and built from Pic ’N’ Save. An old pickup truck was transformed into a giant vacuum the Klowns used to suck up their victims. Super Soakers from Toys R Us, with a few added embellishments, became the Klowns’ weapons and cost about $10 each.
Klown Tech Ralph Miller and Klownzilla, played by Charlie Chiodo, are seen behind the scenes of"Killer Klowns from Outer Space."The Santa Cruz Sentinel offered up a less enthusiastic response to the movie. “Yes, it was filmed in Santa Cruz, although there might be some discussion about whether to publicize this fact or not,” read Rick Chatenever’s review of the film.
He added that he and his brothers were approached by producer Chris Bearde to turn the film into an animated series, but Trans World Entertainment didn’t want to franchise the property, and the deal fell through over budgetary disagreements. After Trans World Entertainment folded in 1993 and sold its library of 150 titles, including “Killer Klowns,” MGM picked it up and asked if the Chiodo Brothers would be willing to do a commentary on the movie with behind-the-scenes footage for a DVD rerelease, which came out in 2001.“People started stealing the VHS copies in video stores,” Stephen Chiodo said. “You couldn’t find ‘Killer Klowns’ anymore because people were snatching it. And we started going to conventions.
“There were scary clowns before ‘Killer Klowns.’ But none of them had teeth like ours,” Edward Chiodo said. “We’re not so much into people killing people and harming people and causing mayhem. We grew up loving monsters, and we wanted the film to be a fun escape.
