The study found that people with early stroke were more likely to have blood type A and less likely to have blood type O compared to people with late stroke and people who never had a stroke. Both early and late strokes were also more likely to have blood type B. “Our meta-analysis looked at people’s genetic profiles and found associations between blood type and risk of early-onset stroke.

“Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States, but is the second leading cause of death in the world,” says, board-certified vascular neurologist and neuro-interventional surgeon at Pacific Stroke & Neurovascular Center at Pacific Neuroscience Institute in Santa Monica. She adds that more than 50% of stroke survivors older than 65 have reduced mobility, which can lead to lower quality of life.
