The present owner, Paul Oxborrow, who started the B&B in 2008 after buying the house flat by flat, says it simply made sense to decorate according to the era it was constructed, but he clearly has a passion for it too, and for hunting down appropriate antiques . Formerly a religious studies teacher and, for a time, an Anglican priest, he has a wealth of religious artefacts throughout that amplify the Christmassyness.

Unfortunately, it’s only possible for a minimum of six, so the two of us must scarper out for dinner . We return to Kings Road and the excellent Farmyard, pink-walled and strung with fairy lights .

A new apartment next door, soon to be available as a holiday let, is more specifically themed around the Japanese-influenced aesthetic movement . “It’s a sort of Oscar Wilde, slightly decadent look,” Oxborrow says, with Asian-influenced ceramics and black “Japanned” furniture. And so to bed. The house is a little chilly, but it feels atmospheric to cosy up under a heap of blankets. I suppose others might find it spooky, but I don’t. At dawn the weak sunlight tinges the sea pink and we take coffee in the dining room before pottering outside in the frost.
