US firm unveils the 5.3L Hetzer flat-eight, a high-revving, air-cooled engine debuting in its lightweight, analog-focused R3 supercar.

A US custom car outfit has unveiled a hand-built 5.3-liter air-cooled flat-eight engine set to power the firm’s upcoming R3 sports car. Runge Cars ’ four-cam, 32-valve powerhouse is paired with a six-speed manual transmission to deliver what the Minnesota-based automaker calls “the most visceral, analog driving experience available today.

” Weighing just 1,720 pounds and developed over seven years, the R3 reflects the enduring appeal of internal combustion—even as the automotive world races toward electrification.“Using the best of technology and materials we have been able to model our 5328CC, 8 cylinder engine within the architecture of production 6 Cylinder units,” reads Runge Cars’ post on Facebook . Last year, Porsche’s filed patent for a six-stroke engine, hinting at a shift from traditional four-stroke designs, signaling a potential major evolution in combustion engine technology.Air-cooled revivalAs the automotive world races toward electrification, Runge Cars, run by Christopher Runge, is keeping the spirit of classic air-cooled engines alive. The company’s latest creation, the Hetzer, is a 5.3-liter flat-eight that merges vintage character with modern engineering precision. Developed alongside UK-based Swindon Powertrain and US-based air-cooled specialist Sol Snyderman, the engine features dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and a 12:1 compression ratio. Designed to rev up to 9,000 rpm, the Hetzer delivers a sharp, race-inspired response, capturing the visceral thrill of analog performance, reports Car and Driver. Its four-cam, 32-valve design revs like a race engine while offering a broad, usable powerband.Crafted with advanced CNC machining and motorsport-grade materials, this engine is designed to fit most air-cooled Porsche 911s, offering enthusiasts a groundbreaking way to unlock their platform’s full potential.“The engine’s four-cam architecture and 32-valve layout allow it to rev with the urgency of a race engine while delivering a broad, usable powerband ideal for spirited road and track use. Every component has been obsessively designed to achieve balance, performance, and visual beauty—a true sculpture in engineering,” said firm in a post on FB. Retro speed resurrectedThe engine will debut in Runge’s upcoming R3 supercar, a lightweight machine weighing just 1,720 pounds . The R3 also promises a fully analog driving experience, with all models equipped exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission powering the rear wheels. According to Carscoops, early renderings reveal a low-slung front end, circular headlights, a modest front grille, and a compact cockpit, complemented by wing mirrors perched high on the A-pillars. At the rear, a sweeping curved wing completes the purposeful, performance-focused aesthetic.Details on pricing for both the R3 and its 5.3-liter Hetzer flat-eight engine have not been disclosed, but given the meticulous craftsmanship and bespoke engineering involved, exclusivity appears inevitable. Production will likely remain limited, reflecting the car’s intent as a collector-focused, high-performance machine rather than a mass-market vehicle.R3 will feature the mid engine Flat-8 paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.“The Runge Flat-8 and new R3 platform will be available for customer orders in late 2025. The first 3 Flat-8 engines are exclusive to Runge commissions. Sales to the public with full specifications, performance data, and pricing to be announced in the coming months,” said the FB post. While regulatory trends push the automotive industry toward electrification, consumer demand in the US has not matched expectations, prompting manufacturers to continue investing in internal combustion, reports Motor1. Ferrari, for example, recently confirmed that development on engines—including its V-12—has not peaked, and BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche have all reiterated their commitment to gas-powered models for the foreseeable future.According to Motor1, with such continued support and an array of high-end aftermarket offerings, combustion engines show no sign of disappearing, and cars like the Runge R3 demonstrate that the passion for analog, high-revving performance remains alive and well.
