Several of Hitchcock's famous films have been remade without much acclaim. A particularly awful one proves why his filmography shouldn't be touched.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One particularly terrible remake of an Alfred Hitchcock horror classic is all the reason why the historic filmmaker's works shouldn't be touched. Although he released his final film as a living director in 1976, Hitchcock remains a titan of film history to this day, responsible for some of the most brilliant and innovative movies of the Hollywood Golden Age era and of all time.
Some of Hitchcock's most notable horror films include The Birds , Dial M For Murder , and Rebecca . As an auteur, Hitchcock's films were stylized in a way that made it easy to identify him as the director just by watching them without even knowing beforehand. He made several movies about serial killers throughout his career, including The Lodger , Frenzy , and Shadow of a Doubt .
During the 1980s, not long after Hitchcock's death, Psycho attempted to become a horror franchise in its own right with three sequels getting the greenlight as well as a spinoff called Bates Motel in 1987. Anthony Perkins returned to star in each Psycho sequel as his signature Bates character and even directed 1986's Psycho III. Despite the legacy continuity in Perkins' Bates between the sequels, none of them could hold a candle to Hitchcock's classic.
Why 1998's Psycho Was So Unnecessary The inherent risk in remaking or even adapting any of Hitchcock's films is often too great for the potential payoff of a successful update.
