A Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner is heading up for auction at RM Sotheby's. The vintage racer will be among the most expensive cars ever sold.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum holds some of the most historically significant race cars on Earth, but these days, the museum is shifting its focus away from cars that did not race at IMS itself. That means cars like the Ferrari 250 LM that won the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans and a Mk. 2 Ford GT40 that ran alongside Ford's winner in the 1966 race are going to be available to private buyers for the first time — ever.
'55 was the first year of Monza's now-infamous banking, taking the fastest road course in the world and turning it into something even closer to an oval race. Mercedes knew that stability at speed would be a key issue for the race, so it brought sports car-like 'Stromlinienwagen' bodywork for those cars. The team entered two streamliners in the race, one each for stars Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.
