There is one piece of Bay Area public transit that still costs a buck: A relatively unknown Bay Bridge commuter shuttle that hasn’t changed its price in 35 years.

There isn’t much you can buy with a buck in today’s world, particularly when it comes to life in the Bay Area.

“I’m just waiting for someone to cancel it,” said Eyal Mesher, a 37-year-old event planner, who takes the shuttle multiple times a week into San Francisco. “But as long as it’s here I’ll take it.”The shuttle, which is operated by Caltrans, during morning and evening rush hours with a total of 14 pickups from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 3:50 to 6:15 p.m. between Oakland’s McArthur BART station and the corner of Main and Bryant streets in San Francisco near Pier 30.

“It’s the best-kept secret,” said Aaron Hernandez, a tattooed bicyclist who sipped an iced coffee as he rode the shuttle on Tuesday. “I sold my car last December because the toll was going up, gas was going up – It was bleeding me dry,” said Hernandez. “And biking keeps me in shape,” he added with a smile.
