A third police investigation into an alleged gang sexual assault involving Canadian junior hockey players has been launched.It is the second of the three known police probes to be reopened, after having been long since closed.
In a statement, the QMJHL said it “has been informed of the reopening of an investigation into alleged incidents which occurred in Quebec City in early 2014 involving Gatineau Olympiques players.A statement released by the Quebec City’s police service on Friday neither confirmed nor denied that an investigation has reopened into the matter described as “an alleged sexual assault involving a victim and four Gatineau Olympics players, which allegedly took place in January 2014.
The second allegedly occurred late in the evening on Feb. 20, 2015 at a restaurant in Gatineau — reportedly a “public sex act” at a Boston Pizza. Local police investigated that incident, but in April 2015 closed that probe without bringing charges. At a hearing before a special parliamentary committee last month, Hockey Canada officials confirmed a spring 2022 TSN report that it quickly paid off the alleged victim, shortly after she filed a civil suit this past April in which she sought $3.55 million in damages from hockey’s domestic governing body as well as from other defendants.
It is delving into shocking allegations first described in a TSN story late last month about an incident purportedly involving more than a half-dozen members of Team Canada during the 2003 world junior championships in that city. The players each allegedly had sex with a naked, unconscious woman. Conservative MP John Nater described those alleged details as “disgusting.
All of it, however, failed to silence the governing body’s critics. Calls for mass resignations of the organization’s leaders only intensified.
