A third endangered North Atlantic right whale was spotted entangled in fishing gear off the east coast of the United States, authorities reported Monday. All three whales were North Atlantic right whales, of which there are fewer than 400 and are vulnerable to collisions with ships and becoming entangled in marine equipment. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that an aerial survey found a whale entangled about 60 miles (96 kilometers) east of the Outer Banks of North Carolina on December 16th. A few days earlier, another aerial survey located two entangled North Atlantic right whales off Nantucket, Massachusetts, NOAA officials said. Like one of the whales spotted off Nantucket, the whale seen off North Carolina had a serious injury and likely will die as a result of the entanglement, the agency said.
