TROY – Troy treated the biggest crowd of the season – and third largest in Trojan Arena history – to the biggest win of the year by bouncing rival South Alabama 65-55 on Saturday.
Troy improved to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. South Alabama is now 14-6 overall and 6-2 in SBC play. “I think he was putting so much pressure on himself because he was first-team All-Conference … I’ve got to score and I’ve got to do this,” Cross said. “That guy changes the game with his defense and his toughness and grit. I think he’s getting back to that because that’s what made him so good last year.
Senior guard Tayton Conerway had a somewhat off night offensively, connecting on 4-of-17 field goals, 1-of-10 from three-point range, and 1-of-4 free throws for 10 points. He was averaging a team-high 12.7 coming into the game. “His energy I did feel got better in the second half. I called him over one time in the second half and said, ‘Tay, you’ve got nine assists, man. Don’t worry about how many points.’”
But on Saturday, every time South Alabama made a push to get close in the second half, Troy had an answer to maintain the advantage. The Trojans led 32-26 at halftime and never trailed in the final 20 minutes.
