As DFW Airport celebrates its 50th year, CEO Sean Donohue talks about the future of aviation.
You’ve been with DFW International Airport since 2013, just about 10 years of the airport’s 50-year-old history. Tell us about your time here as you reflect on the past. It’s been a fast 10 years and we’ve seen quite a bit of growth at the airport, which is great. What I always frame growth around is we are mirroring the growth of North Texas. As North Texas grows, we grow and we always have to stay ahead of that growth.
Our first year was 1974 and we served 7 million customers in 1974. In July, last month, we served 7.8 million. So in July of this year, we served more customers than we did in our entire first year. If you look at international, which is a huge focus of ours, in 1974, there were 8,000 international customers at DFW at the year. There were days this summer there were 40,000 and we’ll handle 11 million international customers this year. The growth has been exponential in the first 50 years.
In the last 50 years, DFW Airport has grown into this massive economic driver. What’s your next goal? How do you continue that growth?Short-term: I want DFW, over the next five years with our $7 billion capital program, when that’s done, I want us to look back and say we did it on budget, we did it on time, but we also did it in the least disruptive manner we could.
