Though it’s only a few weeks since we enjoyed a four-day Easter break, we’re already approaching our next extended break. The first of May’s two bank holidays takes place on Monday, 6 May and there’s a number of events and activities taking place to mark the occasion.
Saturday, May 4 Sweat at The Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester A sweeping state-of-the-nation play that embraces huge political and economic ideas in a magnificent gritty social drama continues at The Royal Exchange this week. Lynn Nottage’s 2017 Pulitzer-Prize winning drama, directed by Jade Lewis is already being tipped to become an ‘American Classic’, and what better way to spend the Saturday of a three-day weekend than immersed in some drama.
The Wizard of Oz at The Palace Theatre, Manchester City Centre Direct from The London Palladium, the sensational new production of one of the world’s most beloved musicals continues its run in Manchester this week. Starring award-winning comedian and musical theatre star Jason Manford as The Cowardly Lion, JLS singer Aston Merrygold as The Tin Man and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne at The Wicked Witch of the West, audiences are really in for a treat.
A Day Out with Thomas, East Lancashire Railway Running all throughout the Bank Holiday weekend is the return of the always-popular Thomas the Tank Engine at the East Lancashire Railway from Friday May 4 to Monday May 6. Featuring a line-up of esteemed and upcoming acts across two stages, including Fumiya Tanaka, Ron Obvious, Doudou MC, DJ Senc, Samuel Deep and Youandewan, the party spirit will well and truly be in action. Begins at 2pm and runs until 11pm. If that’s not enough, there will also be a separate, ticketed after-party following proceedings too. Tickets here.
The venue-hoping musical feast will see more than 100 emerging artists in the pubs, churches, greens and ‘in-between’ spaces of the city. Venues from Peel Hall and Old Fire Station Cafe to The Old Pint Pot, Bexley Square and The New Oxford will play host to live acts, DJ sets and art performances from the likes of Welsh icon Gruff Thys, underground hip-hop gem Kinkai, Mercury Prize nominee C
