Car radar sensors help control special functions like collision and cruise control. Here’s how to deter thieves from stealing them. They’re small, but costly to replace. News4’s Darcy Spencer spoke with experts on how to avoid getting car radar sensor stolen.
A little device called a car radar sensor, usually tucked behind the front plate or automaker emblem, helps with features like cruise control and collision avoidance. And thieves want them. “There’s a lot of bells and whistles on cars that people don’t realize they have,” said Oleg Lurye, a production manager at National Auto Body in Rockville, Maryland. A video obtained by NBC Washington shows thieves stealing the sensors. The growing occurrence prompted increased police patrols in neighborhoods.National Auto Body workers say thieves could get up to $150 bucks for reselling the part. However, owners could pay thousands of dollars to replace them.An online search shows sensors from some Honda CRVs are in demand, but thieves target other models, too. To deter thieves, car owners can order radar sensor guards online for up to $50. Police recommend keeping vehicles in well-lit, well-traveled areas or in a garage.
