Andy Muschietti And Barbara Muschietti Talk They Will Kill You.
In the last week, we’ve seen the release of several stories where blood-soaked women attempt to fight their way out of desperate, horrifying circumstances. Prime Video’s Pretty Lethal pits five ballerinas against a slew of grunts in Budapest, while Ready or Not 2: Here I Come has sisters — played by Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton — fighting their way against the rich and powerful for the fate of the world.
Almost like a frenetic, unhinged, super-violent amalgamation of those two films comes They Will Kill You, by director and co-writer Kirill Sokolov. While those aforementioned films relished in the violence and over-the-top nature of their bloody stories, They Will Kill You ups the ante with absurdism, gore, and cinematic homages it wears proudly on its chest. It might not be the most nuanced action film of the year, but They Will Kill You makes up for it with style and wild abandon. Zazie Beetz Must Kill Her Way Through a High-Rise in 'They Will Kill You' When we first meet Asia Reaves and her sister Maria, they’ve just escaped the grasp of their abusive father, who has locked them in his basement after the death of their mother. The first scene in the film shows this pair staring at a store display of a normal family made of mannequins having a blast together, as Asia and Maria stand there watching during a downpour. But Asia and Maria’s father catches up with them as they try to make their escape to New York City, with cops surrounding them. In a moment of desperation, Asia shoots her father and leaves her sister behind, as she makes a run for it. A decade later, we find out that Asia’s attempt to outrun the cops was a failure, as she was caught and spent the last ten years in jail. Her father survived, and Maria remained in his grasp. We catch up with Asia as she goes to work at a New York high-rise known as The Virgil, which is absolutely littered with demonic imagery before she even enters the doors. Asia got word that Maria is now working at The Virgil, and Asia has come there to reunite with her sister. The building’s manager, Lily , tells Asia that The Virgil has existed for over a century and is home to the wealthy and powerful. Later that night, Asia is woken up in her room by people in masks, and despite being outnumbered, Asia fights and kills all of them . But when Asia finds Lily outside her room, she finds that the people she just killed…have come back to life. Lily reveals that The Virgil is a Satanic temple and that its residents are immortal thanks to their frequent human sacrifices. Asia was to be one of those sacrifices, yet it quickly becomes clear that she’s not going down without a fight. As Asia fights her way to safety, she also has to find her sister and get the hell out of this demonic building before they become the next sacrifices to Satan. 'They Will Kill You' Takes Pleasure in Going Wild and Ridiculous Sokolov goes all-in when it comes to They Will Kill You, a film that cranks up its ridiculousness and just has fun with the concept of a Satanic death hotel. Sokolov leans into his cinematic inspirations liberally, as it’s impossible not to think of The Bride in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, the farcical and evil violence of Sam Raimi, or the imagery of many Blaxploitation films. Even the way Sokolov frames certain shots, or zooms out to show the interior of The Virgil from a distance, reminds us of Wes Anderson’s style of directing — particularly the way he shot the titular location of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Sokolov even utilizes stop-motion animation for some of the more ludicrous moments of the film, which adds a layer of playfulness and goofy fun. They Will Kill You certainly isn’t at the level of an Anderson, Tarantino, or Raimi, but it’s great that Sokolov at least attempts to lean into the work of these filmmakers for his bloody action film.Posts 20 By Diego Pineda Pacheco Sokolov and co-writer Alex Litvak are far more interested in style over substance, however, as They Will Kill You works as a killing fest, but rarely in other ways. The relationship between Asia and Maria isn’t ever that compelling, and it feels like little more than an excuse for how to get Asia into this building without her just trying to leave. Similarly, there are moments where the film hints at bigger ideas and never follows up on them. For example, we’re told that each floor of The Virgil caters to a different vice. But beyond showing what is essentially the orgy floor for a few seconds, this really doesn’t come into play. It’s a strange addition that feels like it’ll pay off later on, but it never figures into the story in any major way. Zazie Beetz Proves She's an Action Star in 'They Will Kill You' They Will Kill You is a great testament to the fact that Zazie Beetz should be a major action star. While she’s appeared in movies like Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, and The Harder They Fall, the entirety of They Will Kill You lands on her shoulders, and she does a fantastic job of holding the weight. They Will Kill You presents an interesting premise with its action sequences: the people Asia is fighting literally can’t die, but they also can’t kill Asia because they need her for their sacrifice. It’s a fun push-and-pull throughout the film, and Beetz handles the action with both badassness and bluntness, while also leaning into the comedy of the scenario. The rest of the cast is good here, particularly Heather Graham and Tom Felton, who often get the worst of the action scenes . Patricia Arquette is also having a ball as the manager of The Virgil, but it’s a shame we don’t get more of her. We learn of her history with the building and her relationship with her husband is an important through line, but it always feels like it could use a bit of narrative heft. The same is true of Felton, Graham, and the rest of the inhabitants of the building. They Will Kill You seems like it’s going to make these characters an important part of the larger story, but instead, they’re just treated like disposable enemies for Asia to dispose of multiple times in gross and bonkers ways.
