On July 18, 1984, a gunman killed 21 people and wounded 19 others at a McDonald’s in San Ysidro. At the time, it was the largest public mass shooting in U.S. history.

“I would never succeed at anything,” she said. “And I felt like a loser. Like, 'What is wrong with me?’ And, 'It’s been a long time. Like, get over it.’ But I never really could.”She almost never left her mother’s house, where she lived. When she was a little girl and people asked her what she wanted to be, she always said three things: a mommy, a teacher, and a normal girl.

He bit down on a cloth so the others in the closet, already panicked, wouldn’t have to hear him moan.“Just give me a chance to see my family one more time before you take me away,” he prayed. “If you don’t take me away, I’m going to do something good with my life.”He didn’t want to ask his mother and sisters to care for him “like a baby.”
